–High Surf Warning issued for Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau through 6 a.m. Friday–

The US National Weather Service Honolulu (NWS) has issued a High Surf Warning for north-facing shores of Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau in effect through 6 a.m. Friday. The warning may be extended, dropped, or modified as conditions develop.

The NWS forecasts dangerous surf 20 to 25 feet along the north-facing shores of Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau. A very large north swell will build tonight into Thanksgiving Day. This swell will produce surf reaching warning-level heights along the north-facing shores of Ni‘ihau and Kaua‘i, according to the NWS. The swell coincides with strong gale-force northeast winds, as well as the high tide during the early morning hours on Thursday and Friday. Significant overwash issues and large wave run-ups along north-facing shorelines may result.

Entering the water in these areas during the High Surf Warning is very hazardous and could cause serious injury or death. Beachgoers are also advised to use extreme caution, as large breaking waves could make it dangerous for those standing along the shoreline.

The warning may be extended or modified as conditions develop. For updated information on ocean and weather alerts, visit the NWS website, www.weather.gov/hfo.
