Hanapepe posts $12,649 in Medicaid claims for dental services in 2024

Hanapepe Medicaid providers submitted $12,649 in claims for Dental Services in 2024, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Medicaid Provider Spending data shows. This total represented a 122.9% jump from 2023, when $5,675 was billed in the same category.

Medicaid is a state-administered public health insurance program funded by both federal and state governments. The program provides coverage for low-income families, seniors, children, and people with disabilities and forms a major segment of the nation’s health care system.

Since Medicaid funding is taxpayer-based, trends in local billing levels reflect how public health care resources are distributed in specific communities.

The “Dental Services” category comprises Medicaid-billed services grouped by care type according to standardized HCPCS and CPT code sets. In this report, each billing code was attributed to a single category through uniform code prefixes and ranges, facilitating the aggregation of related services for analysis, without overlap in counts and preserving historical category rankings.

While other categories also saw growth, Dental Services ranked highest in Hanapepe for total Medicaid payments in 2024.

Statewide, Dental Services placed 11th by total Medicaid payments in Hawaii in 2024.

From 2019 through 2024, Hanapepe’s Medicaid payments for Dental Services rose by $8,511, or 205.6%. The pace of spending growth picked up during certain periods, with notable year-over-year gains observed in 2023 and 2021.

Although Dental Services costs for Medicaid were distributed within the city, the majority of payments originated from a few ZIP codes. In 2024, ZIP code 96716 accounted for $12,648 in payments, representing the full share of Hanapepe’s Dental Services Medicaid payments that year.

Within the Dental Services category, payments to Medicaid were focused across a small set of billing codes.

To compare, Hanapepe’s Medicaid payments for Dental Services grew 122.9% from 2023 to 2024, in line with the 122.9% shift seen across all Medicaid claim categories in the city during that period.

According to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, combined federal and state Medicaid spending reached approximately $871.7 billion in fiscal year 2023. This represented about 18% of all national health expenditures, a significant increase from $613.5 billion in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic.

This growth equals nearly 40% over several years, primarily driven by broader enrollment and higher service use during and after the pandemic period.

These measures are likely to increase costs for states and constrain federal spending growth, even as millions of Americans remain enrolled in the program.
