--Firefighters extinguish brush fire in Koke‘e Friday night--

KOKE‘E – Firefighters responded to a brush fire Friday night that broke out in Koke‘e.

No injuries were reported.

Shortly after 7:30 p.m. on Friday, firefighters from the Waimea and Hanapēpē fire stations were dispatched to a brush fire reported near mile marker 4 along Waimea Canyon Drive. Once on scene, personnel found an area, approximately 50 feet by 50 feet, of brush and trees on fire and slowly spreading.

Access to the fire was difficult as it surrounded a small reservoir. After finding an area to cross the irrigation ditch, Waimea firefighters from Engine 7 attacked the north side of the blaze and was able to quickly contain the fire spread. Waimea firefighters from Truck 7 worked the south end of the fire and extinguished brush and trees that were burning. Hanapēpē personnel from Truck 6 and Engine 6, along with the on-duty Battalion Chief, also assisted in efforts to fully extinguish the blaze.

After the brush fire was extinguished, KFD crews cleared the scene around 11 p.m.

Personnel from the State Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) were called to monitor the area for hot spots through the night.

During the response, Waimea Canyon Drive, between Panini Place and Koke‘e Road, was closed until approximately 10:15 p.m.

The cause of the fire is undetermined.
